Abstract

Dropping out of engineering colleges or programs increases sustainable skill gaps and future dependency rates among young people. Therefore, this study used systematic literature review to explore relevant theories, methods and practices related to dropout behavior prevention or control among engineering students in higher education institutions. Using PRISMA guidelines, the review identified 252 studies and reviewed 43 studies relevant to dropout prevention in engineering colleges. The findings revealed diverse approaches to student retention. It also found pedagogical variation as the frequent and effective intervention while andragogy/seminar, machine learning /data, mindset training and systemic/policy remains least effective measures. The study discusses the implications, recommendations, limitations and future research direction.
